This is the story of Matthew Ingram’s visit to the Ecovillage Findhorn in 2023. He came to do research for his latest book The Garden: Visionary Growers and Farmers of the Counterculture which chronicles how a generation influenced by psychedelics, Eastern philosophy, and reactions to Vietnam, the Oil Shocks, and DDT became interested in sustainable growing and farming. The book contains a chapter about what happened when the hippies came to Findhorn.

Throughout the long process of caring for my wife, I started and ended each day with a reading from Opening Doors Within by co-founder Eileen Caddy. As well as sustaining and encouraging me, I was often astonished by the relevance and wisdom of the daily guidance. It was as if Eileen Caddy was speaking directly to me.

Aureolis was the spiritual name of Dr George Sullivan (1890-1942), Peter Caddy's first spiritual teacher. Dr Sullivan was Supreme Magus of the Rosicrucian Order Crotona Fellowship (ROCF), a small initiatory school in the Western mystery tradition, which flourished in England from the 1920s to 40s. The following paper, detailing the history, philosophy and activities of the ROCF, comprises information from several sources. A further reference list is given at the end.

This document summarises some of the principles of the Rosicrucian Order. It is sourced from one of a series of pamphlets produced in the 1930s by the Rosicrucian Order Crotona Fellowship (ROCF). Like many, if not all of the Order's publications, it was written by the Supreme Magus of the Order, Dr Sullivan writing as Aureolis. Dr Sullivan was Peter Caddy's first spiritual teacher and Caddy was a member of the ROCF in the 1930s.
