Publishing Ventures
Like many projects in Findhorn, printing and publishing started organically in the 1960s, born out of increasing interest in Eileen’s guidance by people around the world. In the beginning, Eileen’s words were typed up and sent off, as simple carbon copies, to a select few within the network of light in touch with the Findhorn group.
As the community grew, the messages were duplicated on a hand-operated roneo machine, initially by Peter and ROC, and later by Dorothy on ‘George’, a bigger printing machine, until in 1969 the printing operation was taken over by a new community member. The pamphlets with Eileen’s guidance, God’s Word Through Elixir, and later on also Dorothy’s God’s Word Through Divina were distributed in monthly instalments to a widening circle. In 1971, out of these publications developed the very first book, God Spoke To Me, which was released in Findhorn under Eileen’s spiritual name Elixir and is still in print to this day.
Most books, study papers and journals appeared either as A5 booklets with pure white covers and simple lettering, larger booklets with textured covers, or in a square format. They were edited, designed, printed and bound in the small publications building at The Park. Initially, the printing was located right next to today’s Sanctuary in the Community’s office, where, not surprisingly, it was soon deemed rather loud. The machine then moved to an annex nearby, later on to what is now the General Office, and from 1974 onwards to the present building in front of the Universal Hall, now Big Sky Printing’s premises.
From 1966-1974 Findhorn Publications published over 100 books, booklets, periodicals and pamphlets, followed in subsequent years by a widening range of titles, including the periodical One Earth. All of these were coordinated in the Publications Department of the Foundation.
In 1994, long-term members Karin and Thierry Bogliolo took over the publishing activities from the Foundation, with part of their list of titles, and started shaping them into an independent business. Today, led by Thierry and still independent, Findhorn Press offers books, sets of cards, CDs, mp3s, e-books and apps, all on a wide range of mind-body-spirit topics. We publish about 20 to 25 titles per year, focusing on spirituality, alternative health (for both people and animals), self-help and nature. Next to Eileen Caddy authors include ROC, John Brierley, Marko Pogacnik, Renata Caddy, Diana Cooper and more. Three imprints are combined under Findhorn Press: Findhorn (for most topics), Camino Guides and Earthdancer (crystal books). Many of our titles are also travelling the world in other languages: Opening Doors Within, a long-term bestseller in English, has been translated into 31 languages, including Gujarati and Persian.
Nowadays, staff, production and distribution are spread in many locations. Still partly based in Findhorn, though no longer at The Park, our virtual office unites us in cyberspace between Scotland, France, Sweden, USA and Germany. Nevertheless, many of our existing or prospective authors still have a connection to Findhorn, and often feel honoured to become part of our extended family. A small, dedicated team, we strive to make books that matter and hope to bring an inspiring, positive outlook to the world.
