There is a mystical side to Gaelic culture that has at times been suppressed by the more dominant reformed Christian theology that has found a home in parts of the Western Isles. At times, that dominant culture has proved to be less than tolerant of alternative spiritual paths. What appeared to arise in Lena was a deep and resonant spirituality that was not always conventional but drew deeply on that ancient Gaelic culture and heritage. One thing that came across in talking to Ruth was her deep love for Gaelic language and culture and of ‘cianalas’, a longing to be home. But through her mystical sensitivity, it is perhaps the case that these words of George Bain that meant a great deal to her, which Ruth shared, have a more profound truth than just a longing to be home on the Isle of Skye: ‘May your steps return from all corners of the globe under the guidance of the star that points to home’.

Today, whatever faith tradition we are part of, if we are part of one at all, we are learning the wisdom that people like Lena knew long ago, that reverence for the land and the natural world, and the conservation, nurturing and preservation of what is left of this fragile and beautiful earth is perhaps our greatest vocation and privilege.

Her husband said once to Ruth, “I lost a lot when I lost Lena”. And, indeed, now that she is lost to the world, even more than in her own lifetime, her wisdom, her passion, and her profound and sincere spirituality will arise more profoundly amongst those whom she touched and influenced throughout her life.

There is a phrase that Ruth has used several times when we have talked in relation to her mother, one that Lena used as a reassurance to others: “You’ll see my light.” Perhaps more than ever in her passing, we will see her light still as we revolve memories of those whom she touched in her life. She has gone to that greater light, and we can only trust that she has been awoken to that mysterious light that lies beyond life.
