JEFF HAMILTON

It is with great sadness that we learned of the sudden passing of Jeff Hamilton, beloved husband of Pearl (Pearl’s Pet shop).

Jeff was a long standing supporter of our community and he and Pearl were our NFA AGM election overseers for 15 yrs, for which we are deeply grateful.

A lovely, unassuming gentleman who was always pleased to be associated with the Findhorn Foundation Community in a number of different ways/roles.

He will be sorely missed by Pearl, family and many friends.

Dear Community and Friends.

Gay and Dominic Stuart photo Dominic StuartWe are delighted to tell you that we were married on Saturday the 1st of February on Salt Spring Island, British Columbia. The marriage took place at the home of dear friends in their guest cottage with a reception dinner in their house.

We were attended by three dogs – two of whom we are dog-minding. St Brigid is the patroness saint of Ireland, and her day marks the ancient Celtic festival of Imbolc (in the belly, or womb), the very start of the impulse of Spring.

The ceremony, beautifully overseen by local Marriage Commissioner Jacquie Byron, though small, felt very warm, moving and spiritually connected. We will be having a party out here in the summer. Now two days later we are snowed in, so we did it just in time!! Looking forward to seeing you again later in the year.

With much love and blessings from the winter wonderland.

We heard that long-term Fellow, Elisabet Sahtouris died on 1st December, aged 88. As a Findhorn Fellow, Elisabet has had a a significant impact on the evolution of our Community. Her positive worldview as an evolutionary biologist influenced our culture and very directly she shaped several conferences as presenter

  • From Individual to Collective: Politics as if the Whole Earth Mattered (1988)
  • The Beauty of Surprise: Science & Mystery in Self-creating Universe (1989)

and as one of the main initiators of

  • The New Story Summit – Inspiring Pathways for Our Planetary Future (co-focalised by Richard Olivier and Yvonne Cuneo)

Until quite recently she was an active contributor to email conversations in the Fellows group. Thank you, Elisabet – for everything you have given so generously.

[From David Earl Platts: I] share the sad news just in about a friend and frequent visitor of Findhorn, Andrew Ferguson, from his daughter, Lorna. Friends will remember Andy from the time when he founded and ran The Breakthrough Centre in West London for a number of years. He also was an accomplished saxophonist and later in life played in a band which toured around southern England. He and I used to meet up for lunch in London.

Sadly,

David

Andrew, 77, passed away peacefully yesterday morning (Monday 17th June 2024) following a short illness. He asked us to let you all know of his passing. His wife Lynne was with him through it all and could not have done more to ensure he was loved and comfortable. He loved his music, and we are grateful for the comfort Miles Davis provided at this time. In line with his wishes there will not be a funeral. Lynne will scatter his ashes in a beautiful place where he will be surrounded by nature.

Hi dear friends,
I just heard the very sad news that Erica Jakobs died at 1 am this morning. She had been in hospital since Saturday and seemed to be improving, but she suffered a heart attack a couple of days ago and deteriorated after that. Many of you may remember Erica from her many years volunteering on Cluny Reception. The funeral will take place on Monday 24th at 10.45 in St Lawrence Church in Forres.

Rest in peace dear Erica.

Firebird by James Hubbell

It is with a heavy heart that I forward this news from his family of the passing of James Hubbell.

James helped birth the ecovillage here, setting the scene with Sim Van der Ryn in 1982 in their design ‘charettes’ for what we wanted to do and inspiring us to just get on with it. The ‘Gaudi-esque’ clay model he produced of the ‘Sun Petal’ cluster become the centrepiece of the October conference that year – “Building a Planetary Village”. The watercolours sketches he did in his spare time became the design for the window that adorns the entrance to the Universal Hall. And, of course, most recently he and his team in California re-created the Firebird window that originally adorned the Upper CC, was lost in the fires several years ago, and whose replica now hangs in the Upper Foyer of the Universal Hall. And that reproduction process happened while James was in his early 90’s! What a guy, and his heart was as huge as his talent. He will be sorely missed. His family writes: You may share your memories, read his epilogue, and learn more about his life on our website.

Dürten Lau Fri 12th April 2024 photo Vera Bohlen

Sad news about Dürten Lau‘s transition into the light: Monday evening – Community meeting – the AGM of the NFA, Craig came in to share with the us that Dürten had died. The Community had just released her from the Listener/Convener post which she held for the last 2 years as job-share with Annie Crawford. So she was already in our mind and in our grateful hearts, and we just went into silent meditation when we got the news.

Dürten had to reduce her Community involvement once she was diagnosed with leukaemia in August 2023. Sadly the course of her disease was such that she wrote on 26th March in the Rainbow Bridge, that she had run out of treatment options. For her last days she was at home, surrounded by friends and family.

So many tributes have flowed in on Facebook and in the Rainbow Bridge. We will endeavour to get all the relevant permissions to be able to publish them in the collective autobiography. Please send us your tribute to honour this amazing woman and member and Community leader.

Ali Jack reduced photo Gavin JackAlastair John Hay Jack

19th June 1935 – 5th January 2024

Ali passed away very peacefully on Friday at Dr Gray’s Hospital in Elgin after a short illness. I was by his side.

He and his wife Vicky had moved from Edinburgh to Dunphail in the mid 90s in large part to be closer to the Findhorn community, with which they both had a strong connection and affinity. Since the loss of his beloved wife Vicky in 2021, he had been living in Varis Court in Forres and could be seen in the town and occasionally around the park always accompanied by his signature rainbow umbrella which he used partly as a walking aid but mainly for waving ‘hello!’ to folk he knew.

He will be much missed by his family and friends.

His wish was for a simple cremation and for his ashes to be scattered in the grounds of his beloved Oakfield cottage, a hidden little ramshackle gem where nature was generally left to do its thing with gentle guidance and minimal interference (apart from regular food for the birds and squirrels who flocked in grateful abundance). This seems very fitting for a man with a lifelong passion for ecology and a deeply felt love of nature (as a child we were drinking out of jam jars long before it became hipster chic).

This gathering will likely be in the Spring or early Summer and details will be posted once a date has been set.

All best wishes Gavin Jack (Ali’s son)

A more formal obituary will go out in due course but we did want to let community know and to request that if you have thoughts, testimonials, memories, photographs, etc., of George please send these to ccc.coordinator@parkecovillagetrust.co.uk so that we can help to collate all this for a tribute.

Printed materials can be left in the CCC letter tray in the GO mail room.

A life well lived, a man well loved, a transitioning well done 🥰

We just heard the sad news that Stefan Bronic, who was the Phoenix Café manager for a time, left us unexpectedly. He leaves behind a family and children who are raising fund to pay for after death costs through Go-Fund-Me where Gabriela also share more about his death:

Stefan was my dear friend and former husband. We have known each other for the last 17 years, travelled and lived together. We were looking after 3 boys and supporting each other in life. He was a great friend, father, son and brother and we all are going to miss him very much.
Stefan suffered from severe depression and bipolar disorder which grew worse the last few years. He has spent much time raising awareness about these causes.
He took his life a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, the illness killed him.

I have sad news re Beverley Hare.

Many of you here will remember dear Beverley, who was a member of this community for quite a few years, one of which was as Focaliser of Cluny.

I’m sad to say that her cousin rang me yesterday to say that she had died in the early hours of that morning, from unexpected complications due to a chest infection.

She was in a care home near family near Brighton, England, having become progressively debilitated with dementia over the past few years.

My last conversation with her a couple of years ago was on the phone when she didn’t know who I was, a distressing thing for us both.

So I choose to remember her like this photo, taken on one of our many walks.

Dear Friends,

Shin-ichiro Terayama has been focusing on recovering for his illness; however, it is with great sadness that we hereby inform you the passing of our beloved Shin on November 1st at the age of 87. We would like to express our deepest gratitude for all the love, friendship and support you have given him.

The funeral was held among close family members.

Shin took time off from work since the beginning of this year. Many people have given him kind and warm words and were looking forward for his online seminars and workshops to start again. Sadly, we no longer can meet your wishes. Shin continued to work until the end of last year, and he lived fully his wonderful way of living since his health declined until his last moment.

Words are not enough to express how grateful we are for everyone who had association with Shin in Japan as well as overseas for many years.

With heartfelt gratitude.

Bernadette and Christoph Greiner chose to die with medical assistance in their home in Switzerland. They had loved and lived well, attended to all of their affairs and then stepped together into the light.

Their motto was Love Always Wins – and only at the gathering of friends after the meditation to bring our hearts and presence to their transition did we see the even deeper truth of that motto: Love Always Wins – LAW – it’s The Law. They certainly embodied that law.

Dear Findhorn Foundation and Community members,
I’m not sure if you had become aware or not, that my father Christopher Layton who was a Findhorn Fellow passed away on 12th March this year at his home in Tavistock, Devon aged 93.

Some of you might be interested to know that the Times will publish an obituary to Christopher tomorrow, Saturday 2nd September 2023, available in the shops in the printed newspaper. (The additional, digital version of the Times where it will also appear, is only available to subscribers).

He had led a long and varied life, and the obituary gives quite a good overview, and will have some nice photos also. With such a long life, 900 words necessarily skims over much detail. But the Findhorn Foundation does get a brief mention and description in the piece.

Kind regards,
and all best wishes for the future,

Sarah Layton

Johnny Brierley, 1948-2023, his final pilgrimage across the threshold.
Jill, Ben, Georgina and Gemma are sad to bring the news of Johnny’s death, peacefully at home in the early hours of Sunday 2nd of July.
We travelled from Dublin to Findhorn in 1987 and the years we spent there were some of the happiest and most transformative of our lives. It was this outer journey to Findhorn that kicked started an inner journey for Johnny that culminated in the Camino Guides which have been his life’s work for the past quarter of a century.
Though we left Findhorn in 2001 he always saw it as his spiritual home and the community as family.
We send our love, appreciation and gratitude to all of you who have been holding him and us in your meditations, we know it helped to make his passing so graceful. With the love and light that flowed at the time we do not feel the need for a big funeral and will instead be having a small cremation ceremony, restricted to immediate family only. But those of you who knew and loved him will know how he felt about a good Scottish whisky and are welcome to raise a glass to him and wish him well on the next phase of his pilgrimage.

Ulf Ellingsen writes: Nearly 30 years ago a Psychosynthesis councillor training took place at the Foundation. The Psychosynthesis and Education Trust was responsible and provided a good programme and many highly skilled teachers/therapists. Arif (Per Jarle Dyrud) became gradually the main teacher, returning to work with us again and again over the years. Through his way of teaching, his wisdom and his skills – and of course through who he was – he touched my life deeply; supporting me in getting a better grasp of the Spiritual reality of life, providing tools to meet it and tools to help others. I know that Arif had a significant impact on many.

He died on the first of April after being ill for a short time, and I can easily imagine him with a twinkle in his eyes, saying something about dying, sure, but only an April fool would believe that to be the end of it. Thank you Per Jarle and blessings on your continued journey home.

John Wragg passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends.
John had been ill for some time, a couple of years ago he had to leave his home in The Park and moved into sheltered housing in Forres. His greatest joy was that from his flat he could see The Park across Findhorn Bay. For the last few months he was in a care home in Elgin where he was cared for and at peace.

Katharina Brocke slipped away very peacefully with Elisabeth and her family as well as some friends present. Many knew about her journey with cancer that started 3 1/2 years ago. She consciously surrendered to this biggest transformational journey with grace and openness and deep love.

Solstice December 2022

In the last few weeks we have been tending the grief of losing Jan Nowell and Mena Vieira. Two remarkable women who contributed, in their different ways, much to our Community over the years. They died within a few days of each other after a brief journey with aggressive cancer, leaving their family and friends, as well as the many communities they have been part of, in shock.

Then just a few days ago we received the message that Julia Zalazar has passed away on 18th December.

Our NFA Listerner/Convener, Dürten Lau, writes: Julia came first here in the nineties and served the Foundation with deep dedication and passion for many years. She then returned to her homeland Argentina for a few years but was longing to come back.
When that finally could happen, she got a caravan between The Park and Kinloss. She was so happy when she was accepted for the care flat in East Whins in March this year. That also made caring for her so much easier when she started to need it. Thank you to all who supported her throughout he last months.
Julia was kind, caring and generous; she loved community and supported it where and whenever she could.
Fly free dear Julia, may your soul rest in peace.

And just before completing this Winter Solstice Newsletter we heard from Carly Newfeld that Will Raap had passed away unexpectedly. She called him ‘a dear one from the 1970s’, and sent us an obituary of this inspiring visionary and leader in Vermont, USA from the local newspaper.
