“THE STORY OF former US Army special operations sergeant Thomas Miller is one of radical transformation and a journey from war zones in Afghanistan and Iraq to the celebrated Findhorn Foundation spiritual community.
Pivotal was Experience Week in 2013 when he had two major realisations.
‘The first was going to lunch with the people I was sharing a room with and realising that they totally accepted me. Perhaps for the first time in my life I felt no pressure to be anything besides who I was.
‘The second was waking up the morning after Experience Week. I had the clearest sensation I’ve ever had of some non-physical being hovering over me. It was sharing the knowing that I was deeply unhappy and wasn’t able to relate to others in healthy ways.
‘It was an aspect of my deeper self showing up. Nothing was forcing me to change, but being here had allowed this important realisation to emerge. I decided to stay and work on this.’
The past seven years have been about healing, learning and service. ‘I was able to heal psychologically and physiologically after being in war zones. I learned to connect with the consciousness of nature and with subtle beings in new ways.

‘I experienced many positive aspects of community life: a lot of warmth, support, and the opportunity to engage with new people frequently and to get to know people very different to me.’
Today Thomas heads fundraising, which has been key to the Foundation’s financial survival since it’s had to close to guests due to the pandemic.
‘For me, Findhorn is a worldwide community of many beings – not just humans – who are embodying and helping to manifest a new world.
‘I’m aware that the world is conscious and alive, that I am partnering with life, co-creating with the consciousnesses of nature, angelic and other realms. ‘At Findhorn I’ve learned to sense the outpouring subtle energies of the plants and other beings when I walk in Nature. I sense the sacredness in the world. When I work on fundraising, I sense inspiration and higher qualities entering my awareness.
‘Co-creation with nature consciousnesses and non-physical allies is opening door after door within me. Consciously connecting with trees, birds and the overlighting beings of physical places and people, I keep having deeper realisations about how I can partner with and participate in the world.
‘I now feel a deep calling to help move the boundaries of what humans consider normal, to help people find more wholeness and connection with the consciousness of the world, and to live from their creativity, enjoyment and inner freedom.
‘My sense is that one essential thing Findhorn can now offer the world is a vision for how humans can live focused on wholeness and thriving, rather than on survival and money.
‘I believe Findhorn can help cultivate new economic arrangements that have as their goal the wellbeing and thriving of the planet and of humans. Imagine if the money system flowed in ways that made people feel secure and able to be creative, and was no longer a source of stress and fear.
‘Findhorn is not an otherworldly place. It’s earthy, practical and messy – and that’s the point. It’s an advanced training in how to be human.’
