About Sarah James

After I left Findhorn at the end of 1978, I traveled around the world by myself. I worked for 15+ years in sustainable community planning, and now am retired. I participate in insight meditation.

Came to the Findhorn Foundation Community: I came to the community in 1977 to participate in the 3-month Essence of Findhorn Program. I became a member afterwards.
Left the Findhorn Foundation Community: I left the community at the end of 1978 and traveled around the world.
Areas of involvement with the Findhorn Foundation Community: I worked in the Park Maintenance Department. Was in the Ladies Barbershop Group.
Community leadership: I focalized the Park Maintenance Dept for a while in 1978.
Experience in the community affected your work in the world: Yes. I came back to the community to participate in the Planetary Game, and during that time, it became clear that my next work was to be in the area of sustainability. My work background was in city/town planning, so I started learning and showing how planners could incorporate sustainability considerations in their work. I met and teamed up with the founder of the Swedish Ecomunicipality movement, and he and I wrote a book (cited below) about the accomplishments of the Swedish ecomunicipalities and how others could follow their example. We brought this approach to the US and founded the North American Ecomunicipality movement.
