Roger Doudna asked me whether I and my inner colleagues could shed some light on ‘Whither Findhorn?’[1] at this time, and the Community’s role and purpose in the greater scheme of things.

While working on a passage about angels for a book I’m finishing up, (Partnering with Spirit II: The Gaian Alliance; Partnering with Spirit I: The Foundations is at the printer’s now…shameless plug!) I had an interesting conversation with one of my subtle colleagues which touched on the Findhorn Angel. Given our recent email exchange and your question to me, I thought I’d pass the information along.

The morphology of angels is complex; compared to them, we as incarnate humans are more like single-celled creatures while they are multi-cellular. This has nothing to do with our shape or physiology, of course, but everything to do with our consciousness and the ways we can become fixated in a particular direction or around a particular belief and thus unable to see the world in more holistic, systemic ways. We do, though, have it in us to become “angel-like,” and I think some of the changes in human consciousness that we seem to be experiencing (and certainly the systemic demands upon our consciousness) are leading us in that direction. But that’s a whole other matter!

What I was being shown with respect to the Findhorn Angel is that now, with the proliferation of different “communities” within the larger Findhorn umbrella, the full “multi-cellular” nature of the Findhorn Angel has a chance to manifest. The more complex, in the sense of interconnected, interrelated and collaborative, the different elements within the overall Findhorn identity can be, the more the complex nature of the Angel can connect and manifest. Of course, this puts a challenge before everyone to find ways of working together as a whole eco-spiritual endeavour within which their individual contributions are honoured and able to thrive, but then, coordination is always an issue for multi-celled organisms!

When I lived at Findhorn in the early Seventies and was first tuning into the Findhorn Angel, it was—at least to my vision—a simple presence. Essentially, it was the equivalent of a zygote in the development of a human being, the beginning of what I think of as a “subtle and spiritual organism.” This was by no means its “true” or complete nature but only that much of itself as could connect and interact with the community at that time.

As the community grew and became more diversified and complex (adding the art studios, Pineridge, the Park Building, expanded gardens, the Community Centre, the Universal Hall, Cluny Hill, Erraid, Traigh Bahn, etc.), the form that the Angel took—its connection to the evolving Findhorn experiment—was able to grow and become more complex, too.

This was especially true as an international Findhorn-connected community developed. The Findhorn Angel, to my understanding, is a planetary Angel [2] in its work and outreach, not at all restricted to one small area of Scotland. Seen on the Inner, Findhorn as a presence, an energy field, wraps around the globe and has a global effect. (Not trying to “puff” anything or anyone up here by saying this; there are many such global organisations, spiritual and otherwise, which is as it should and must be at this time in human history. But Findhorn and the Findhorn Angel do have a unique and special role in championing an idea of community that extends beyond the physical plane and also embraces the wholeness and healing of Gaia.)

It was interesting to me to see that eventually the Foundation itself became a block to the full expression of the Findhorn Angel, not because of anything in particular it was doing wrong but because it was focusing everything through a single organisational presence. It was not a large or complex enough container for the Angel. Neither was the community by itself if the community acted in fractured ways.

The Foundation (and the pioneering work of Peter, Eileen, Dorothy, and ROC, and many others) has made it possible for the Findhorn Angel to be of service (and in presence) to the world. It laid the foundations, which is what it was meant to do. Now, a new stage of growth and manifestation is possible—and needed, to build on those foundations.

The point of what I was being shown by my inner colleague and by our conversation together was that the Findhorn Angel is currently able to manifest or express more of itself and its potentials than ever before. This is a GOOD thing! The challenge will continue to be to both hold a diverse and diversifying field on the one hand and a felt sense of a united and unifying Identity on the other… The challenge every good multicellular organism has had to face!

I am quite sure you are all up for the challenge!

[1] I want to acknowledge that Findhorn is the name of the traditional village, and that this name has been appropriated for decades to describe the spiritual community that has evolved from what is now known as the Park Ecovillage Findhorn. I am using the term Findhorn here to describe the wider context as it is understood by many around the world. I have no intention to disrespect the local neighbours of the Park Ecovillage and apologise for any offense caused.

[2] Thinking further on what I wrote about the Findhorn Angel being a “planetary angel.” That’s one of those bits of esoteric information that can roll easily off the tongue (or off the fingers, in my case) and becomes a form of occult jargon, without really being explained. It should be explained! After all, just what constitutes a “planetary angel?” I felt I left this question unresolved.

The answer is a simple one, and it has nothing to do with rank or status or power, per se. It means an angel that functions best and to its fullest potential if it has multiple points of contact and connection with humanity and the earth, rather than, say, one or two. The angel of my home has my house and our family as its primary point of contact, and that is all it needs to perform its function. A “planetary” angel, on the other hand, either has or requires points of contact with a diverse group of human beings representing different races, ethnic groups, nationalities, etc., who are located in equally diverse places around the globe.

Thus, if the Findhorn Angel were only connected to the place and land of Findhorn or the area around Findhorn Bay, Forres, Elgin, etc, it would be a local angel, not a planetary one. But the potentials inherent in the Findhorn Angel—part of its angelic architecture, metabolism, function, “physiology,” and so forth—find their fullest expression if connected to a variety of people in a variety of places around the world. It requires diversity and, as I said in the text above, complexity to fully manifest itself.
